Schuyler and got down on a little gravel dirt ride sunday in the fort; weather was nice and the banquet beer was flowing. We happened upon a canoe that looked seaworthy and no one was in it so we gave it go. it was quite a lovely afternoon followed by dinner with COdiesel. solid.

Showtime came out to good old colorful Colorado a few weeks ago to hang out in the mountains under the premise that if Rach watched the bears packers game and then drove him to Carbondale he'd hem our curtains. (guess what? we're still waiting for showtime to hem the curtains- asshole!) We had a few breakfasts in the poptop and did a couple donuts as well. On our first day of shred I picked grizzle up in Aspen and took him to the Highlands for his first time. It turns out that Highlands is a lot more fun on a powder day or closing day than a normal hardpack so we packed up shop and headed over to Snowmass to find the noon groom. On this particular day we had to cut the shred short in order to make hors d'oeuvres for Rach's surprise birthday party. We threw down on some bruschetta, homemade salsa, grilled bacon wrapped stuffed with cream cheese jalepeno peppers, baked brie, Katie and Tim made vegetarian chili and Rach's mom made chili with meat. I wish I had some pictures, but I was too busy cooking and surprising. About 20 of our nearest and dearest came over to the house to celebrate rach's birthday. We had a super good time that concluded in a lovely game of Things.
Tim and I don't get to hang out enough so the next day came a little too early, but we were en route to the snowmass by 9 to meet up with Chase and hope that TIm could get out of work. The skies were bluebird and the hard pack was as good as it gets which made for a fantastic day of high speeds and beer drinking. plus we had wings! yeah wings!

the barnard hut

Last week we took a little trip to the Barnard hut just outside of Aspen. It was about a 7-9 hour adventure into the woods over 8 miles and 2500' of climbing. We made it to the hut just before sunset and instantly scarfed gorp, cheese, salami, cookies, tequila, whiskey and the stupid twelfer I hauled. Then more food; Sean cooked us a stellar bacon sausage spaghetti for dinner and soon after we all passed out for the evening. Day 2 started with several rounds of coffee to go with pancakes and bacon to fuel us for our day of skiing across from the hut. We broke trail through the woods in a foot of fresh before we crossed the ridge to our starting point. OC dug a pit and discovered that the snow had several incredibly weak layers on top of rotten snow on the bottom. Which means that we needed to stick to the trees and stay off the face to minimize the avalanche risk. We got ready, took our 1st lap down the trees and everyone shook off the cobwebs. At the bottom everyone agreed that another lap was needed. 1 hour later we're at the top again and have a better idea of where to descend through more open trees. OC played middle man and stationed himself near a grove of trees on a rollover to survey the action that we couldn't see from the top. Everyone else got to ski the pitch top to bottom one at a time which was amazing. Once again the crew wanted to take another lap which was monumental given the amount of bitching going on on the previous lap (myself included!). So we put the skins on and "think I can think I can'd" it all the way to the top for another hot lap. In the evening we drank whiskey coffees along with all of the remaining booze because there was no way in hell it was going to be carried out. Chase and Amy cooked stir fry for dinner and we then played an impromptu game of "Things" at Rach's request until we could no longer stay awake. Our last morning came too early and we had our last meal of sausage burritos before cleaning up the hut. The nice part about going back to the trailhead was getting to ski several pitches and only a few sections when it felt like a deathmarch. We all made it back without injury save for blisters and blue toenails. It was a stellar trip and I can't wait to do it again...even if I'm terrified to put my feet back in those damn ski boots!

Well Dudes, the USGP New Belgium cup came to town last weekend and it was quite the event. Pros were everywhere along with the Dead Deer [Photo Club]. I guess Schuyler did some stellar black out bike prep for the costume race on Sunday and didn't tighten down his basket. So the Deaddeer didn't make the podium.

IMBA epic bromance

hello - several weeks ago Schuyler and I went on another date up to Curt Gowdy State park in Wyoming. A couple years ago Wyoming had one progressive thought and figured that if you build it they will come - So they partnered up with IMBA and went the distance in order to ease his pain, what? IMBA came in and built ~30ish miles of trail through three different eco-systems ( high plains, upland montane & riparian. not sure what those last 2 are but they involve precambrian exposed granite and sandstone). Basically, its pretty awesome riding through terrain you might not expect to find in Wyoming right off of the plains. oh and its garnered an IMBA epic status.

Anyway, after a healthy amount of shit talking and imbibing several cocktails and vegetables at a backyard BBQ dance party compliments of the Meister; we agreed to pull out of the fort at 6:45am in order for me to make it to my 8am work BS meeting in Cheyenne. Determined not to "Jacoby" it I set 3 alarms, packed everything I might need and pedaled off into dreamland for a nap. Holy shit, it's 6:15 and I'm awake. Now let's see if Schuyler's blowing it, nope not a chance, he's down. Post meeting, we fueled up on food from a dennys/ihop/clone and head straight to Curt Gowdy to get Epic. We make it to the park to discover good weather and 30 miles of super fun trail - it has all of the cliches you'd find in a good dirtrag article. We got our freeride on and then found the "secret" waterfall (it is literally called the "secret" waterfall on the park map) where we hung out for a bit. Then we headed out for another hour of trail shredding back to the car. Curt Gowdy deserves its Epic rating and you should check it out. I'm going back there today. Eat shit.

dudes - sorry for the lack of posts. I feel that a lot of the cycling crap I see on the internet is so full of prolific epic moments chalk full of hyperbole that I was just over it for a moment. I'm certainly guilty of it as well; so in the future I'll TRY and write a dialogue that checks the proverbial avalanche of [internet cycling] cliches at the door. Because/besides if you know Dead Deer, then you know we had a hell of a time, drank a vat of beer and perhaps visited a different mental state resulting from the shred fest of "epic" proportions. and those epic shred fests could be drinking coffee while listening to jazz, riding across town in flip flops, walking, riding 3 wide in a big rig shirtless, mastering french toast, sewing, guitar-ing, skating or stealing souls/moments in time with a point and shoot.

So onward..

A few weeks ago Schuyler and I went on a night ride with the Blacksheep dudes (http://www.blacksheepbikes.com/). I was a little apprehensive as I seemingly always feel a bit anxious when I ride with new dudes; there's always a bit of doubt in my mind as to whether or not I'll come back satisfied. I think it comes from living in the mountains where you have endless opportunities to go on different rides but you're constrained to a certain amount of time. So you get in the mode of weighing your options of who to ride with and where as you are always trying to get the most bang for your buck. But in Fort Collins, it seems like the time table is thrown out the window along with the rule book regarding your obligations. There is always time for an exploratory ride that might suck or be completely awesome. This ride will focus on the latter.
Schuyler and I met at the Blacksheep house at 8:45, bro'd down and hit the road with 5 strangers headed south into the night toward Coyote Ridge. A new moon and a storm brewing over the front range brought darkness and a keanu (cool breeze to the layperson) to us all as we spun out 32:18/19/20 or whatever down the road with the red lights flashing. It was my first time up Coyote ridge and that ride has a solid 3ish climbs to get the blood flowing and make you realize that it's early October and you don't need long sleeves. Coyote has a really fun 40-50 ft long section that has steps that are deeper than your bottom bracket and closer together than your wheels and it was awesome to see everyone just bounce and flail through it (self included.) after that we made our way up the last climb to the Blue Sky trail. Some people hate on this trail as it's not technical and often crowded during the day, but at night riding it for the first time I was everything but disappointed. This trail is full of "roller coasters," "g-outs," "drifty and blind" corners to keep you on your toes while in an "epic" state of mind. After Blue Sky we ended up at the Canyon Grill to re-up our supplies before heading north through Lory State Park. Riding into Lory is like a cataclysmic collision of memories from my previous 7 year stint in the fort; the darkness ceases to be a problem, it feels warmer and the bike just goes where it needs because it and you fall into a familiar rhythm. The only unexpected issues were 3 skunks determined to derail your singletrack mission and make you squeal out a warning to the others / (slash) get rear ended by the guy behind you. oh yeah, the bridges get slippery after the dew falls - they took out one rider. Now, we've exited Lory to haul the road down to the North Dam(mit) climb to the Michaud/foothills trail; this road climb hurts. Bring your A-game, let out a few mother-fuckers, put your head down, pretend its not midnight and 5 beers later and you're at the top. oh wait, there is just one more stand up grind climb till you are truly topped out and ready for the free for all down the baby and adult head sized rocks of the michaud lane descent. Damn that was rad, there's hardly any blood (only scrapes), its's 12:50 and there suddenly is a pace line of single speeds racing southbound on Overland in order to get to Road34 for last call. 3 out of 7 made the final push to 34, grabbed some cocktails and then had the best $3 pizza and fries available.
Get home and realize your ride started at 8:45; it's 2:30AM, you're filthy, frothed, wired and ready to crash out completely satisfied. Sweet dreams.

Cottonwood Pass

Another lovely Friday afternoon ride; this one was about 75ish miles and started from the house over Cottonwood pass to Gypsum through Glenwood canyon and back to Carbondale. As soon as I got to Gypsum it started dumping rain; I rode in blinding rain for about 15 miles in a wool jersey with arm warmers, spandies and knee warmers then it stopped while I was in the canyon until I was about 2 miles from Glenwood. Then the gods dropped the rain hammer of cats and dogs for the 12 miles back to home. In Glenwood, 7-11 coffee and hot dogs never tasted so good or provided so much warmth.

well these photos are from a dirt and road ride in April that started at my house, went over the crown, to the top of old Snowmass, over Watson Divide, to Woody Creek, then Aspen and returned the same way. this ride full on kicked my ass as its about 85 miles with around 5500' of climbing. enjoy.

This stuff is from a day at least a month ago when it required a lot of motivation to get out in the cold. I'd find that the climbs were the best part as it was the only time you could feel your hands and feet, and I would dread the descents. Thankfully, that time is over now as the sun is generously offering up sunburns to pale legs and arms.

hey dudes,
I just signed up for the 18hrs of Fruita (http://www.emgcolorado.com/race_fruita_festival.html) bike race in May and I've partnered up for duo with Randy Johnson. We're pretty stoked as it will be both our first times racing in the duo category and on single speeds. I think that April will be one of the most painful months on the bike I've ever spent in order to get prepared for this race.

But if you have never done an endurance race this is a good one to try as it is relatively close to Denver and the course is kind of tame (~1/2 hour laps around a reservoir - so not much climbing)

Happy March everyone!
Nick from Aloha bikes and I headed out for a kick ass day in the sun. We rolled out of my place around high noon and went over to Sean's house for a beer via dry park rd which is an awesome dirt road that traverses the mountains and keeps you off of the the valley floor. It has a series of good climbs, some rollers and then a 3-5 mile descent to Glenwood Springs. Today it featured mud, ice, snow and lots of puddles which left me jealous of Nick's fenders.
We had a beer at Sean's, re-lubed/cleaned the chains and headed up to Rankin's mom's house for some ping pong. After Nick and I slaughtered (survived) the climb we stumbled in for a beer and Dalene hooked it up with some nachos. We had to cut our stay short in order to make it back before the sun dropped and on our way back along the bike path one of our brethren shed his rack for us about 50 ft off the path. check out Nick with the score, 4x4 & its going on the bike shed! bikes are where its at!!

Several weeks ago we went down to Grand Junction to enjoy some snow free trails and tropical temps, it turned out that the high for the day was 32 and mostly cloudy. brrr. we waited for the "warmest" part of the day by drinking beer and having a stellar guitar session. thanks for the beer and trails Zach.

So internet people, last Thursday I embarked on a journey of awesomeness that began at Lake & Overland at 8:30AM. I was determined to get a solid introductory ride on my new new rig (that is neither lugged or fixed) so I headed out North on Overland towards Bingham hill en route to Lory State Park. On the way up Bingham hill I saw the most beautiful Bald Eagle fly directly overhead and I knew that this ride would be special because as according to Mary Jane (Sammy's mom who is a very spiritual and soulful woman) these things only can possibly mean that good things will come to the person who witnesses this moment. Moving on I had a nice stop at the top of the hill and then motored over to Lory where the singletrack was waiting. the trail was a nice mix of ice, mud, snow, tacky dirt, horse hoof prints and hardpack plus I didn't see anyone else out on the trail. The singletrack through the valley was a bit longer than I remembered but still flowy and fun all the way to horsetooth. I headed out onto the road to climb back to the dam, then with the dam in sight and only one more climb I said to myself, "allright, here's the homestretch," I promptly flatted. But I had a tube and a pump, so I decided to walk the bike over to the dam where I could change it in the sun. To my suprise I ran into Schuyler (btw congrats on the first post!) and 20-30 people on bikes out for a pre feast dam tour ride. These dudes had blasting music, beer and a real good thing going on so I just joined in on the fun for a dam climb until I had to move on to Breakfast with Rach's fam.

It was a fantastic way to start an over the top kind of day! Thanks Fort Collins, again!
